Michelle and I were recently requested to compile an Essential Lesbian Reading list and to no surprise it become clear that our lists would differ vastly. This comes down to the basic fact that the world is made of diverse people and of course readers with vast tastes in literature and the purpose of reading. As a result of our differing reading preferences it became apparent that there were a few stereotypical categories of readers out there and I thought I would share a few with you.

The Award Snob – These readers will seek out and buy books that have won prestigious awards. Eg: If they are purchasing a Science Fiction Novel – No Nebula, No read!

The Skinny – This category of reader buy’s book on length, generally if the pages of the book tend towards the 200 page mark, it becomes too daunting a task and they will refrain from the purchase and opt for a lighter read.

The Size Queen – If it cannot be used as a door stop after devouring page after page of a 1000 page epic, then it will not make their shopping cart.

Cover is Everything – Looks are Everything and the best cover wins. These readers go against the grain of “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”. I would stick my neck out and say a vast majority of readers make their purchase on image. I’m not shamed to admit that I once fell into this category.

The Author Stalker – The reader stumbles onto a certain author or  a book is recommended, the reader enjoys the book and goes on to buy the authors entire collection.

The List Maniac – The book must be worth spending my cash on if it appears on at least 20 reading list and is recommended by at least 10 friends.

The Addict – The reader buys every book across every genre in the book store or until their bank manager takes a pair of scissors to their credit card. Their bookshelf is littered with books still in their cellophane covers waiting to be read. .

The Researcher – These reader’s will spend a vast amount of time to research the book and author, read reviews and featured book clippings on the internet ensuring no stone is unturned and they will indeed get what they have invested in with no hidden surprises.

The Book Clubber – These reader’s buy what they’ve been told is “hot” but don’t actually read the book . Prefer the snacks and wine to the read…

The Penny Pincher – These readers buy book that are ON SALE. Why pay more when you can get it cheaper. Come on click on book of the month, you know you want too.

Penny Pincher’s Cousin – The second hand book dweller. The musty smell soothes their soul as they page through their potential purchase.

Iam bit of a mix between the researcher, author stalker and list maniac. I dont judge a book by it's cover, like to take my time look at it and find out info about the author first before i buy.

I used to be the "Cover is Everything" but now I'm definitely an Author stalker!!! Once I read a good book from an aouthor I will search and find all the books they've written and read them.

Oi Vey... labels, labels... I am definately a size queen, I never buy a book that seems too "THIN", but i am definately an author stalker as well, once i settle into an authors work, I must have more. I am also a penny pincher, as well as the penny pinchers cousin... Oi, that sounds like incest!!! But most of all, I love books that come in a series. The ones that I can almost convince myself are never ending. the longer the series the better. It's hard to depart with frinds you love, and that is what the characters in books become to me... Oh woe is me...

Mmmm, Im definitely a mix between The Award Snob, The Size Queen,The Author Stalker and The Addict. I think there should be a new category for me, "The Compulsive Reader". I just can't stop reading and often 5 books at once! Hehe.
