Right from the memorable opening paragraph, “Farms have fences. People have boundaries. Mine began crumbling the day I knelt behind a male sheep, reached between his legs, and squeezed his testicles”, Hit by a farm grabs your attention, and like some stubborn farm animal, never lets it go.

In a witty chronicle, which never departs from the gritty reality of farm life, Hit by a farm, manages to both entertain and educate. It’s a celebration of the love between two women and the sacrifices they are willing to make for each other.

What I liked about this book is that, unlike some romanticised Hollywood ideas about love and commitment, it never shies away from the real hard work and grim determination that underlies the success of any committed relationship.

At one stage I felt like the author seemed to concentrate too much on technical farming terms, but she manages the amazing balancing trick of moving forward with the narrative, without allowing falling into some academic discourse of farm life. It’s a balancing trick of humour, the narrative of their relationship life and life on the farm, that keeps you spellbound right to the last page.

So, are you ready to be hit by a farm or are you chicken?
