Colleen McCrady, an aspiring writer, is on the verge of having her first novel accepted for publication. Elizabeth Albright, owner and managing editor of Standing in Sappho's Shadow Publishing-Triple S, as it's known in the lesbian publishing industry-gives Colleen a helping hand, and in the process, the two discover that a love for lesbian literature isn't the only thing they have in common.

Despite their romantic chemistry, Colleen and Elizabeth are at odds over other aspects of their relationship. Try as she might, Elizabeth can't get Colleen to reveal many details of her childhood and family life. Colleen is likewise stymied in her attempts to get Elizabeth to bring their relationship out into the open. The situation comes to a head when Colleen offers Elizabeth a new manuscript-one which will either take their relationship in a new direction or destroy the bonds between them.

Elizabeth is drawn into Colleen's tragic past as she discovers the long-buried secret that Colleen reveals in her new book. A mystery that is nearly a half century old is reopened when Elizabeth helps Colleen unravel the puzzle of what really happened to a lone, deaf black man who worked on Colleen's fathers farm in northern Minnesota all those years ago. The story that unfolds is a multilayered tale of love and hate, bigotry and acceptance, heartbreak and triumph,
